Palestinians Denounce Israeli Minister’s Threat Against Prisoner
(MENAFN) The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ Affairs on Monday denounced Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for threatening to execute a Palestinian detainee inside his prison cell, describing the treatment of prisoners in Israeli detention facilities as “organized terrorism.”
Ben-Gvir shared a video on Sunday showing himself inside the cell of Palestinian prisoner Hassan Salameh, in which he directly threatened the detainee, saying: “I want to kill you. I want to execute you.”
Commission chief Raed Abu al-Hummus criticized the footage in an official statement, saying it demonstrated that the mistreatment and humiliation of prisoners had reached unprecedented levels. He also characterized conditions in Israeli prisons as “organized terrorism.”
Abu al-Hummus questioned the international community and its institutions over their response to the treatment of Palestinian detainees, cautioning that failing to intervene against such practices “encourages further violations.”
Salameh, who originates from the Gaza Strip, has been held in Israeli custody since 1996 and received several life sentences, according to Palestinian prisoner organizations. He was excluded from the 2011 prisoner exchange agreement, under which Israel released hundreds of Palestinian detainees.
Following the video's publication, Ben-Gvir stated on X that he would pursue the implementation of death sentences against Palestinian prisoners if appointed defense minister in the next Israeli government.
