J&K Establishments Owe ₹6,870 Cr In Power Dues

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Government, semi-government, commercial and industrial establishments, along with security forces installations in Jammu and Kashmir, owe over ₹6,870 crore in unpaid electricity dues to the Power Development Department (PDD), the Legislative Assembly was informed on Monday.

The figures were provided by the government in response to a question raised by Pampore MLA Hasnain Masoodi during Question Hour.

According to the details placed before the House, government and semi-government establishments account for the largest share of the outstanding dues at ₹3,155.69 crore.

The commercial sector owes ₹1,833.60 crore, while industrial consumers have pending dues of ₹1,005.89 crore. Security forces installations owe another ₹874.97 crore.

The combined outstanding amount across these categories stands at ₹6,870.15 crore.

The government said the DISCOMs have been undertaking sustained measures to recover outstanding electricity dues through systematic monitoring of arrears, issuance of demand and payment notices, liquidation of outstanding dues and disconnection of electricity supply in cases of persistent default.

“Disconnection of electricity supply for nonpayment of dues is an ongoing enforcement measure,” the government said, adding that such action is taken by the concerned field formations after following the prescribed procedure.

The House was informed that 88,387 electricity connections belonging to government, semi-government, commercial, industrial and security establishments were disconnected during the financial year 2025-26 over non-payment of dues.

A further 50,226 connections were disconnected during the financial year 2026-27.

The government said electricity supply is restored after consumers clear the requisite outstanding dues and complete the prescribed reconnection formalities.

The DISCOMs are also strengthening their revenue recovery mechanisms, with particular focus on commercial, industrial and other high-value defaulting consumers, the government said. (inputs from KNO)
