Türkiye's Fidan: Israel Now Pays 'Heavy Price' Amid Isolation
(MENAFN) Türkiye prioritized dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation throughout the UN General Assembly's high-level week in New York, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a news conference on Saturday.
Recapping a packed schedule, Fidan said he had participated in more than 40 bilateral and multilateral meetings, with Palestine remaining a top priority on Ankara's diplomatic agenda.
"We advocated dialogue over conflict, diplomacy over crises, and cooperation over division," he said, underscoring Türkiye's commitment to resolving both regional and global crises through diplomatic channels.
According to Fidan, the Turkish delegation raised Israel's genocidal policies in Gaza, along with its occupation and annexation activities, in every meeting it attended.
He noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, delivering his 16th address to the UN General Assembly, once again spotlighted the plight of the Palestinian people on the world stage. Erdogan additionally held 16 bilateral meetings, joined a high-level event on climate action and just transition, and took part in talks with US President Donald Trump and Gulf Cooperation Council leaders on regional matters. He also met with Turkish citizens residing in the US, Turkish and American business figures, and representatives from American think tanks.
Fidan characterized Erdogan's General Assembly address as a manifesto laying out Türkiye's global vision.
Palestine and Regional Diplomacy Take Center Stage
Fidan said he convened with counterparts from Indonesia, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates in an eight-country format focused on Palestine. He also participated in discussions on last year's New York Declaration and the comprehensive peace plan.
Separately, he held four-way talks with the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, plus trilateral discussions with his Syrian and Saudi counterparts. Under the Mecca Alliance framework, Fidan also met with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for broader consultations.
As chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's Council of Foreign Ministers, he led its annual coordination meeting in New York. Türkiye further co-hosted a session with the US titled "International Support for Peace, Unity and Prosperity in Libya."
Fidan noted that regional and global developments were also discussed during an informal meeting of the Organization of Turkic States' Council of Foreign Ministers, and he attended the 30th MIKTA foreign ministers' meeting ahead of Türkiye taking over the group's chairmanship in 2027.
Ankara Reaffirms Push for UN Reform
Fidan said Türkiye contributed to UN initiatives spanning migration, development, humanitarian assistance, climate change, and food security during the high-level week. Turkish officials also engaged in meetings on the Rohingya crisis, the Alliance of Civilizations, and Crimea, while Türkiye hosted a session of the Group of Friends of Mediation.
He emphasized the need for the international community to craft shared solutions to common challenges, reiterating Ankara's stance that regional issues should be resolved through regional ownership rather than external intervention. Fidan added that Türkiye reaffirmed its longstanding backing for reforming the UN system, and outlined its priorities for the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference, which it will chair and host this November.
