Rubio, Lavrov Hold Talks on Ukraine Settlement at UN
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Wednesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss prospects for reaching a settlement to the conflict in Ukraine.
The meeting took place during the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, according to reports.
The talks were held behind closed doors and began without opening remarks for the media. The meeting lasted approximately 50 minutes.
The discussions came as Washington continues efforts aimed at facilitating a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Moscow has said it remains willing to engage in peace negotiations but maintains that conditions are not currently in place to resume a negotiating process.
Before the meeting, journalists gathered around the two officials and called out questions as they prepared to begin. Lavrov turned toward the reporters and said in English: “Why were you so silent?”
Following the talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the two diplomats "held a detailed exchange of views on a wide range of bilateral and international issues."
