Bear Attacks Prompt Negligence Investigation in Siberia
(MENAFN) Six people have been killed in brown bear attacks in Russia’s Siberian Krasnoyarsk region this month, leading authorities to open a criminal investigation into alleged negligence by local officials.
The brown bear population in the region has risen to more than 26,000, reaching around 2.5 times its previous level, according to reports citing the Investigative Committee’s regional branch.
More than 120 bear sightings have been reported by residents across over 15 districts, including the regional capital, Krasnoyarsk.
Authorities said local officials had received repeated warnings about the danger but “failed to take measures to regulate the predator population or prevent them from appearing in areas inhabited by people.”
“As a result of the improper performance of duties and a lack of adequate oversight, six fatal brown bear attacks on humans were recorded in September 2026 within the Yeniseysky, Sosnovoborsky, and Yermakovsky municipal districts of Krasnoyarsk Krai,” it said.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incidents as part of a criminal case opened over “negligence.”
