Pakistan Names First Secretary-General of Mecca Defense Pact
(MENAFN) Pakistan appointed retired Lt. Gen. Nauman Mahmood as the first secretary-general of the Mecca defense pact on Wednesday, placing him in charge of the secretariat of the trilateral agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan.
Mahmood will lead the alliance’s General Secretariat in Riyadh, according to reports.
He previously served as head of Pakistan’s National Defence University in Islamabad from November 2021 until April 2023. Mahmood joined the Pakistan Army in 1987 and retired from military service in 2023.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement in August.
The pact seeks to advance security, peace, stability and prosperity among the three countries while enhancing their collective deterrence capabilities.
Under the agreement, any attack targeting one of the signatory countries is to be treated as an attack against all three parties.
