Switzerland Urges Israel to End Occupation of Palestinian Territory
(MENAFN) Switzerland has urged Israel to bring an end to what it described as the "illegal occupation" of Palestinian territory, while expressing "serious concerns" over the current conditions there.
Speaking at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Swiss Ambassador to the UN in Geneva Thomas Gurber said Switzerland "condemns settler violence, confiscation of land, industrialization, destruction, expulsions, and forced displacements."
"We urge Israel to respect its obligations under international law, especially put an end to the illegal occupation of occupied Palestinian territories, and hold those responsible for crimes accountable," he added.
Gurber also highlighted human rights concerns in Afghanistan, China and Libya during his remarks on Tuesday.
Regarding Afghanistan, he warned that fundamental rights and freedoms were facing increasing and institutionalized restrictions, particularly for women and girls. He also criticized a decree that does not establish a minimum age for marriage.
Turning to China, Gurber raised concerns over the country’s new law concerning ethnic unity and progress. He said its implementation in its current form could seriously weaken the linguistic, cultural and religious autonomy of ethnic minorities, including Tibetans, Uyghurs and Mongols.
