Netherlands Seeks EU Protection for International Criminal Court
(MENAFN) The Netherlands has asked the European Commission to prepare a "blocking statute" aimed at shielding the International Criminal Court (ICC) from potential additional US sanctions, the country’s foreign minister said Wednesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Tom Berendsen voiced concern over continued pressure targeting the ICC and its officials.
Berendsen said further sanctions could be imposed and added: "We are preparing for anything."
"Within the European Union, we stand strong together, but outside of it, there are individual countries that feel the US is increasing the pressure, and they cannot simply ignore that," said Berendsen.
His comments followed reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering broad economic sanctions against the court.
Berendsen said the US has never backed the ICC but warned that attitudes toward the institution have now undergone a "massive" hardening, potentially threatening its ability to operate.
"We will do everything we can to protect the court," he noted.
