Trump Welcomes Xi to Washington for High-Stakes State Visit
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington on Wednesday, where US President Donald Trump greeted him at the start of a three-day state visit set to shape the trajectory of bilateral relations alongside a host of economic and technological disputes.
The two leaders stood together at the end of a red carpet, flanked by American and Chinese flags, as a US Air Force band performed both national anthems and ceremonial cannons fired in salute. Two B-1 bombers streaked over the airbase as Trump received the Chinese leader.
Back at the White House, Trump told reporters that construction on the White House ballroom was running ahead of schedule, adding that he wished the project had been finished in time for Thursday's state dinner honoring Xi.
Asked whether Iran would come up during Xi's visit, Trump said: "I'll be talking about that and many other subjects, but it's all coming along, including that."
Pressed on whether he agreed with his counterterrorism director's description of fentanyl trafficking from China as "war by other means," Trump called the situation "not good," citing the tariffs and other penalties already levied against China.
Xi, for his part, framed the relationship in more conciliatory terms, according to a state-run news agency. "Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand, and the two countries can contribute to each other's success, thereby benefiting the wider world," he said in a statement marking his arrival.
China and the US, Xi said, should move in the same direction and build a relationship grounded in cooperation, tempered competition, manageable disagreements, and a shared commitment to peace. He argued that even as the world shifts and times change, the underlying logic favoring peaceful coexistence between the two powers — and the international community's expectations of them — remains constant.
Xi added that he looks forward to substantive discussions with Trump on major bilateral and global issues, aiming to deepen what he called a constructive, strategically stable China-US relationship and widen the scope for cooperation between the two nations.
Trump is set to host Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan at the White House on Thursday for a formal arrival ceremony, followed by a military review in the Rose Garden and a bilateral meeting between the two leaders. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will then host the Chinese delegation for a state dinner Thursday evening in the East Room, with a final meeting between the two couples scheduled for Friday ahead of Xi's departure.
Trump said Friday that his talks with Xi would cover "a lot of different deals," predicting a "very good meeting." He also described US-China relations as strong, saying the two nations "get along very well," even while highlighting the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods.
Tariffs on Chinese imports had climbed as high as 145% before being scaled back, Trump said, calling that peak level a measure that was "really hurting them badly."
Trade policy, rare earth minerals and artificial intelligence are expected to be among the central topics of discussion, according to US officials.
Thursday's state dinner is expected to draw a roster of prominent American business figures, including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Michael Dell, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Jane Fraser and Tim Cook, a senior US official said.
