UK Announces Defensive Military Support for Saudi Arabia
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Monday that the United Kingdom will provide Saudi Arabia with “defensive air-to-air refueling” assistance following attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi group.
Burnham said Riyadh had formally requested "military support" and that he approved the request after receiving recommendations from Secretary of State for Defense Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.
According to government officials, the assistance will be "time limited" and is initially expected to remain in place "for weeks."
The Houthis are engaged in a civil war against Yemen's internationally recognized government, which receives backing from Saudi Arabia.
In recent days, the group has claimed responsibility for launching drones and ballistic missiles toward Riyadh as well as energy infrastructure located along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastline.
UK officials said the defensive assistance is intended to support Saudi fighter aircraft in detecting and intercepting incoming Houthi missiles and drones, with the aim of helping prevent them from reaching their targets.
