Democratic Senators Criticize Trump Media Restrictions as TV Coverage Stops
(MENAFN) Democratic Senators Ed Markey and Dick Durbin criticized President Donald Trump's decision Monday to restrict CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, as tensions over media access intensified with a lawsuit and the suspension of pooled television coverage of the president.
The three outlets filed a lawsuit against Trump and his administration, arguing that the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights.
Markey said freedom of the press is "essential" to the functioning of democracy and argued that the administration's decision threatens press freedom.
"Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico will have a chilling effect on all expression," he said, calling the move "authoritarian and unconstitutional."
Durbin also objected to the administration's restrictions on the three news organizations.
"President Trump’s decision to ban CNN, Politico and MS NOW reporters from the White House is a blatant assault on the First Amendment," he said.
He further stressed that maintaining an independent and accessible press is vital to American democracy.
"Our democracy depends on a free and open press—this ban must be struck down as soon as possible."
