US, Italy Strengthen Cooperation on Critical Minerals
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani signed a memorandum of understanding on critical minerals in New York on Monday, during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Rubio described Italy as "a great partner" during the signing and said Washington and Rome maintain close cooperation on critical minerals, an issue he said remains under regular discussion between the two countries.
"He's the deputy prime minister and has become a good friend," Rubio said of Tajani, adding that the United States intends to continue deepening its cooperation with Italy.
Tajani said the agreement represents an important element of Italy's broader industrial strategy and approach to economic policy. He highlighted Italy's position as Europe's second-largest industrial economy and the world's fourth-largest country in terms of trade.
"The prices of our raw materials are very, very important for us," he said, explaining that Italy aims to remain competitive internationally and that affordable raw materials are essential to achieving that objective.
"Today with the United States, we are going a leap forward, a very important one," he said.
