Erdogan, Vietnam's To Lam Meet in New York, Eye Strategic Ties
(MENAFN) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sat down with Vietnamese counterpart To Lam on Monday, holding closed-door talks at Turkevi, the Turkish House in Manhattan, on the margins of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
According to the Turkish Communications Directorate, the two leaders covered the state of bilateral relations along with wider regional and global developments during the meeting.
Erdogan welcomed Hanoi's favorable response to Ankara's push to elevate the relationship to a "strategic partnership," the statement said. He noted that Türkiye is actively working to deepen cooperation with Vietnam across several fronts, singling out investment, trade and the defense industry as priority areas.
The Turkish leader also underscored the value of sustained coordination between the two countries within international forums, telling To Lam that Türkiye and Vietnam should keep working in tandem on shared global challenges.
Beyond the policy discussion, Erdogan offered his congratulations to To Lam on his election as Vietnam's president, and extended an invitation for him to attend the Leaders' Summit of COP31, the UN Climate Change Conference that Türkiye will host in Antalya this November.
Türkiye and Vietnam first established diplomatic relations on June 7, 1978.
