France Backs Pakistan Mediation Efforts, Seeks India Role in Hormuz
(MENAFN) France has called for cooperation with India to help safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while also expressing support for Pakistan's efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States, according to the French Foreign Ministry.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot held separate meetings with his Indian and Pakistani counterparts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
During discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the two officials “underscored the imperative of ensuring freedom of navigation” in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Barrot suggested that France and India coordinate their efforts on the issue, describing it as “crucial to the stability and prosperity of Europe and Asia."
He also referred to a joint initiative launched by France and Britain aimed at maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Barrot and Jaishankar reaffirmed their countries' support for international law and their shared commitment to “effective and reformed multilateralism.”
The ministers also reiterated their plans to pursue reform of the UN Security Council.
In addition, France and India restated their backing for a ceasefire in Ukraine and for “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law.”
