Fiber Line Cut Disrupts Flights at New York Area Airports
(MENAFN) Flights were temporarily halted at several airports across the northeastern United States after an Amtrak construction crew accidentally damaged a fiber-optic line in New Jersey, triggering a telecommunications outage, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday.
The Federal Aviation Administration paused flight operations at multiple airports following the incident involving the US national passenger railroad's construction team.
Duffy later said flights had resumed at LaGuardia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport.
However, service remained suspended for flights arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Teterboro Airport, he said.
"This incident underscores the need for additional funding to modernize aging infrastructure and prevent disruptions like this in the future," Duffy said.
The FAA meanwhile advised passengers to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines and monitor real-time airport information.
