AI Risks UK Economy as Job Losses Could Rise
(MENAFN) Artificial intelligence could place pressure on the foundations of the UK economy by replacing human workers and increasing demands on the welfare system, former government minister Darren Jones warned Monday.
Jones, who previously served as chief secretary under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the government needs to “get ahead of the curve” as companies continue to incorporate AI into their operations.
He argued that the technology could deliver major productivity gains, potentially supporting higher wages or shorter working weeks. However, he also cautioned that rapid advances in AI could reduce the need for human employees and contribute to rising unemployment.
“If the pace of AI development is maintained, and businesses integrate it effectively, we could see cracks in the very foundations of the UK economy,” he wrote.
Jones said a substantial decline in employment would have a dual impact on public finances, reducing the number of people contributing through taxes while increasing the number requiring welfare assistance.
He also questioned whether the existing welfare system would be capable of supporting people who currently earn relatively high salaries and carry costly mortgages if they suddenly lose their jobs.
The former minister further raised concerns about the prospects facing younger generations, asking what the government’s offer to young people would be “if there simply are not enough jobs to go round.”
