Norway, Finland Launch Initiative for International AI Oversight
(MENAFN) Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb have introduced a joint initiative seeking to establish an international organization responsible for overseeing the development of artificial intelligence, according to reports.
Støre said the proposal was prompted by concerns raised by representatives from the AI industry about the rapid advancement of increasingly powerful systems.
“Artificial intelligence must remain under human guidance, supervision, and control, and must be developed and used in line with international law,” the two countries said in their joint appeal.
Under the proposal, AI companies would be expected to create security procedures that are transparent and independently verifiable. These measures would include compulsory safety testing before new models are released, as well as external audits and assessments.
The initiative also urges governments and regional institutions to work toward shared AI standards, strengthen transparency and introduce coordinated systems for reporting serious security-related incidents.
