China Expels Two Senior Generals Over Discipline, Law Violations
(MENAFN) China on Monday removed two senior military commanders from the ruling Communist Party and the armed forces over what authorities described as "serious discipline and law violations."
The Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau approved the expulsions of Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli after examining reports presented by the Central Military Commission, according to reports.
At 75, Zhang had been a member of the CPC Political Bureau and served as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. Liu was also a member of the commission and headed its Joint Staff Department.
Both officers were removed from the Central Military Commission by China’s top legislative body last month after investigations were launched into their conduct.
The Defense Ministry said on Jan. 24 that the two generals were under investigation over suspected “serious discipline and law violations.”
The Central Military Commission, led by President Xi Jinping, holds overall authority over the People’s Liberation Army.
Before his removal, Zhang was the highest-ranking serving military officer in China.
Earlier reports from the military's official newspaper accused Zhang and Liu of weakening Xi’s authority and the Communist Party’s control over the armed forces, while also alleging that their actions had harmed the military’s combat capabilities.
