US Denies Visas to Iranian Press Corps Ahead of Pezeshkian's UN Trip
(MENAFN) Washington has refused to grant visas to journalists set to accompany Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on his planned trip to New York this week, an Iranian official said Monday, as the president prepares to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Habibollah Abbasi, director general of public relations at the Iranian presidency, told Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency that the public would be kept updated on developments surrounding Pezeshkian's bilateral meetings during the visit.
According to Abbasi, the trip—scheduled to begin Tuesday—will run five days total, with two of those days set aside for travel alone.
Pezeshkian will be joined by Mohsen Haji-Mirzaei, chief of staff of the Iranian presidency, and Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, deputy head of presidential protocol and ceremonies, Abbasi said. The Iranian leader is expected to hold talks with several world leaders gathered in New York for the UN sessions.
US authorities have so far made no public comment on the visa denials.
The snub comes against a backdrop of deepening friction between Washington and Tehran, with negotiations between the two sides stalled over disputes concerning navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global energy and commodity shipments.
Tensions escalated sharply after the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to respond with retaliatory attacks on Israel and other regional targets hosting American forces.
