World Leaders Converge on New York for 81st UN General Assembly
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, along with the prime ministers of Japan and Pakistan, touched down in New York this week to take part in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, joining a wave of Asian leaders and top diplomats descending on the city.
Lee departed Seoul on Monday for a three-day trip to New York. Shortly after landing, he stopped by Korea Town, where he "exchanged warm greetings with fellow compatriots who have long nurtured the Korean community here," according to a statement posted on the US social media platform X.
During his stay, Lee is expected to lay out his administration's vision for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and address South Korea's role in tackling global challenges. He is also slated to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and is seeking sit-downs with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders. From New York, he will head to Mexico for a state visit, holding talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum centered on trade, investment and supply-chain cooperation, according to a news agency.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also arrived in New York, though her departure was pushed back roughly four hours after Typhoon Dujuan brought heavy rain and strong winds to eastern Japan, a state broadcaster reported early Tuesday. Takaichi is due to deliver her first address to the UN General Assembly since taking office and is set to meet with Trump on Tuesday.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, has also arrived in New York for the Assembly session.
A number of other Asian nations are sending leaders or senior diplomats to this year's gathering. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for New York early Monday and is scheduled to give his first-ever General Assembly address on Thursday. India's delegation will be headed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is set to address the Assembly on Saturday. Indonesia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sugiono, standing in for President Prabowo Subianto, according to a state news agency. Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan is expected to represent Kuala Lumpur at the General Debate, where he is likely to reiterate the country's positions on UN Security Council reform and international peace and security.
