Vance Backs Trump’s Restrictions on White House Media Access
(MENAFN) US Vice President JD Vance on Monday defended the Trump administration’s decision to limit access to CNN, MS NOW and Politico, saying the outlets remain free to cover the administration but will no longer receive what he described as special access to the White House.
His remarks followed a lawsuit filed by CNN, MS NOW and Politico against President Donald Trump and his administration. The outlets argue that the restrictions infringe on protections guaranteed under the First Amendment.
When reporters asked whether a president should be able to bar media organizations because he objects to their coverage, Vance disputed the characterization of the administration’s actions.
"He's not banning media outlets," Vance said. "What he's doing is saying, 'We're not going to give you special access to the White House if you engage in what is effectively propaganda'."
Vance also asserted that about 92% of the coverage published by the three outlets concerning Trump and his administration is "negative." He argued that this type of reporting does not reflect the perspective of the broader American public.
"So, if you're going to engage in what is effectively far-left propaganda, why would a Republican White House give you special access?" he said.
The vice president was subsequently questioned about his previous support for free speech and whether the administration’s restrictions could be viewed as an attack on press freedom.
