German Chancellor Merz Rejects Resignation After Regional Election Defeat
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described his conservative Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) performance in recent regional elections as a major setback Monday, while making clear that he does not intend to resign from office.
Speaking at the CDU headquarters in Berlin following meetings with party leaders, Merz highlighted the party’s failure to reach the 5% electoral threshold in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, describing the result as an unprecedented development for the CDU.
“That is a severe blow,” he said. “However, the election results and the reasons behind them extend far beyond my person. We are witnessing a profound transformation of the political system in Germany as well as in many other countries.”
Merz said the results in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin reflected growing support for parties on both the far right and the populist left. He referred to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left Party as “destructive forces.”
The chancellor said the CDU would examine the election outcomes over the coming days and assess what lessons could be drawn from the results.
Merz also expressed appreciation to the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the CDU’s coalition partner at the federal level, after it confirmed that it would remain part of the government following Sunday’s elections.
“We want to advance the reform process, yet we know we owe people answers regarding their concerns and fears,” he said. “Many people worry about their jobs, their families, their retirement income, and their healthcare,” he added.
