Best Production Work Order Software For Small Manufacturers
We tested lightweight production-order tools that calculate buildable quantity, reserve components, and update inventory in real time, with no six-figure ERP required.
How we picked the contendersEvery candidate had to clear six non-negotiables: create a manufacturing work order, explode a multi-level BOM, reserve materials, track progress in real time, post WIP or finished-goods moves to inventory, and run without a mandatory ERP.
Prices were checked on public pricing pages on September 21, 2026. With the numbers locked, we profiled six platforms, grouped by fit rather than by score.
Organizely: best for Shopify-first teams that need buildable inventory and light work ordersIf your storefront runs on Shopify and you assemble products rather than machine them, Organizely drops into place with minimal setup. Install the app, sync your catalog, and the Products page gains a Buildable column that respects reserved stock and open sales orders.
Pricing is straightforward: a 14-day free trial, no contracts, and 50 percent off for the first three months. The Stocky plan costs USD 13 / USD 26 for 5,000 SKUs and unlimited orders.
The Pro plan, the first tier with bills of materials and work orders, runs USD 50 / USD 99 for 15,000 SKUs and 2,000 orders. Scale doubles the fee (USD 125 / USD 250) with unlimited SKUs and 7,000 orders.
The platform behind the Organizely Shopify app has processed 1.1 million orders, tracked more than 140,000 SKUs, and synced over 5 million Shopify events.
Stocktakes count committed and reserved stock, not just what is on the shelf. Scope stays narrow: bills of materials, work orders, buildable quantities, and a material graph, all on the Pro and Scale plans.
Routing, finite scheduling, and lot tracking are not on the feature list. Stocky users note: Shopify retired Stocky on August 31, 2026, and Organizely imports its purchase orders, stocktakes, suppliers, and adjustments on any Shopify plan.
Choose Organizely when Shopify is your system of record and the key question is“Can we build and ship this order today?”
Skip it when you require machine-level scheduling, quality inspections, or serialized traceability on day one.
MRPeasy scored highest on our criteria because it handles multi-level BOMs, subassembly shortages, and late rush orders without the bulk of a full ERP.
The Starter plan costs USD 49 per user per month and includes a 15-day free trial, extendable by another 15. Higher tiers (Professional, Enterprise, Unlimited) add serial-number traceability, quality inspections, subcontracting, barcode support, and multi-plant structure.
Native connectors cover Shopify, WooCommerce, QuickBooks, and Xero, with a REST API on the Unlimited tier.
Choose MRPeasy if you want factory-grade MRP logic at SaaS pricing.
Skip it if you need quote-to-cash CRM, embedded CAD, or a fully customizable ERP.
Katana: best for ecommerce-driven manufacturers that crave visual clarityKatana was built for brands that sell online: orders drop into a color-coded board that tells you whether to make or stock.
The Core plan is USD 299 per month. Production tools live in the Manufacturing Management add-on at USD 199 per month, so a realistic starting stack is USD 498.
A free plan with a 15-day grace period lets small catalogs test Katana before paying, and Traceability (USD 249) is a further add-on.
Choose Katana when storefront speed matters more than machine-level utilization and you want a modern, visual interface.
Move on if finite capacity or lot tracking are must-haves from day one.
Fulcrum: best for custom shops that live and die by the scheduleFulcrum is built for job shops where a rush order lands at 3 pm and a laser goes down at 4. Import a multi-level BOM and routing, and the AutoSchedule engine drops every operation onto a live timeline. Drag one high-priority job forward, and lower-priority work reschedules downstream in seconds. Pricing is quote-only.
Choose Fulcrum when on-time promise dates are your edge and you need a schedule that self-heals under pressure.
Skip it if your line runs steady or if published pricing is mandatory for budget approval.
Fishbowl Advanced: best for QuickBooks-centric shops that outgrew spreadsheetsFishbowl Advanced adds a full MRP layer on top of the QuickBooks stack your finance team refuses to leave. Ignore the USD 229 Inventory plan you'll see in older blogs; it handles finished-goods stock only.
Manufacturing starts at USD 675 per month for the Advanced tier. Once live, a sales order in QuickBooks pushes to Fishbowl, which explodes the BOM, reserves components, and rolls WIP into finished goods without extra journal entries.
Choose Fishbowl Advanced when QuickBooks must stay and inventory complexity is high.
Skip it if your whole production crew fits around one workbench.
inFlow Manufacturing: best for inventory-first brands adding light assemblyinFlow began as inventory software, so wholesalers and DTC brands can add assembly without reteaching the team. inFlow Manufacturing is its own plan ladder that includes every inFlow Inventory feature: StartUp costs USD 224 per month for two users (USD 179 on annual billing) and Growth covers five users for USD 561 (USD 449 annual).
On a Manufacturing plan a Build button appears beside each product; pick a bill of materials and inFlow checks availability and creates the work order. There is no routing or finite scheduling; you get BOMs, buildable quantity, and labor and material costing.
Choose inFlow when accurate stock counts are your pain and assembly is straightforward.
Skip it if you need multi-operation routings or automatic schedule replanning.
How to run the 'buildable-quantity' demoDashboards are easy to fake; material reality is not. Run this test in every demo or free trial:
Seed a two-level product: item A needs components B and C plus subassembly D, which has its own BOM. Commit some B to another order and add a purchase order for more B arriving in three days. Ask how many units of A you can build right now, and whether the tool shows the math. Create a work order and confirm the parts lock immediately. Record half the quantity, check that finished goods rise, then close the order and confirm leftovers return to stock. ConclusionPick the tool that matches your system of record and prove it with the buildable-quantity demo. Shopify sellers doing light assembly can start with Organizely on the Pro plan, while shops that need routing, finite scheduling, or lot control should budget for MRPeasy, Fulcrum, or Fishbowl Advanced.
Whatever you choose, run one product family through it for a week and let the numbers make the call.
