Lucius Caviola

Lucius Caviola is an Assistant Professor in the Social Science of AI at the University of Cambridge. His research explores how artificial intelligence will change future society and what new ethical challenges it may pose. A current focus is the question of digital minds: the possibility that AI systems could develop minds that matter morally.
He is based at the Institute for Technology and Humanity at the University of Cambridge, where he directs Cambridge Digital Minds ( and works within the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. He also serves as a Research Associate in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.
Lucius is a contributing author to the new book Perspectives on Machine Consciousness (Taylor & Francis).
By training, he is an experimental psychologist, with a particular focus on moral psychology and judgment and decision-making. In addition to conducting empirical psychological studies, he increasingly conducts empirical research with large language models. He is also interested in the strategic and governance questions raised by advanced AI.
