Muslim Countries Denounce Houthi Drone Attack Near Mecca
(MENAFN) Türkiye, Pakistan, Malaysia and Bangladesh condemned an attempted Houthi drone attack near Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, expressing concern over threats to the holy city and wider regional stability.
Türkiye strongly denounced the incident and reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia’s security.
"We reiterate our call for these attacks, which also threaten regional stability and security, to end immediately and for all actions aimed at further escalating tensions to be avoided," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also denounced the attempted strike near Mecca and urged the use of dialogue to address regional tensions.
"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the dastardly and heinous attempted drone attack against the Holy Site of Makkah Al-Mukarramah," Shehbaz Sharif said in a post on US social media company X.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for restraint and diplomatic engagement after a drone was intercepted near Mecca. He also warned that further escalation could increase tensions across the region.
“Any attempt to threaten the safety and sanctity of Islam’s holiest city would be wholly unacceptable,” he said.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry separately condemned the incident and stressed the importance of protecting religiously significant and sacred sites.
The statements from the four countries came as regional governments voiced concern over the potential consequences of attacks near Mecca and called for steps to prevent further escalation.
