China Warns US Against Disrupting Trade Ties After Russia Sanctions Bill

(MENAFN) China on Thursday hit back at the US Congress's passage of a sweeping sanctions bill targeting Russia, insisting that its trade relationships should not be undermined by outside pressure.

"China carries out economic and trade cooperation with countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit," Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing.

His remarks came in response to questions about the US bill, which imposes mandatory sanctions on senior Russian officials — including President Vladimir Putin — along with oligarchs, state-owned firms, and foreign companies supporting Russia's defense sector.

Guo added that China's "cooperation does not target any third party and it should not be disrupted under the coercion of any third party."

"We always oppose long-arm jurisdiction that has no basis in international law or authority of UN Security Council," he stressed.

Trade between China and Russia has expanded significantly in recent years, topping $240 billion in 2024, with the bulk of transactions conducted in the two countries' national currencies rather than the US dollar.

The US House of Representatives passed the bill Wednesday in a 262-159 vote, with a substantial number of Democrats joining Republicans in support.

The legislation now heads to President Donald Trump for his signature.

If enacted, the measure would give the Trump administration authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase Russian oil and gas — a group that includes both China and India.
