EV Sales Surge: Battery-Electric Cars Top 30 Percent of Europe Market
(MENAFN) Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) captured more than 30% of new car registrations across major European markets in August, a new industry report showed Thursday, underscoring the accelerating shift away from combustion engines.
A monthly bulletin compiled by Brussels-based E-Mobility Europe and independent research group New AutoMotive found that 202,833 new BEVs were registered across 16 European markets in August — a 54.2% jump compared with the same month last year.
BEVs made up 30.5% of all new car registrations across the markets tracked in the report, while their estimated share across the EU as a whole hit 31.2%.
Looking at the broader picture, BEV registrations climbed 33.1% year-on-year between January and August, reaching 1.67 million units. Over that eight-month stretch, electric vehicles held a 22.5% share of the market.
Germany and France drove much of the region's growth.
In France, 36,159 fully electric cars were registered in August — a 72.2% increase from a year earlier — pushing the country's BEV market share to 38.3%.
Germany posted 68,980 BEV registrations, up 34.5% year-on-year, giving electric vehicles a 32.5% share of the German market.
Elsewhere, Norway continued to lead by a wide margin, with BEVs accounting for a striking 98.7% of new registrations. Denmark followed at 85.9%, Finland at 52.3% and the Netherlands at 48.9%.
Belgium posted a 46.2% BEV share, while Portugal saw electric cars make up 36.1% of new registrations.
The report's data spans Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland — markets that together account for roughly 90% of the combined car market across the EU and European Free Trade Association.
