NATO Chief Urges Greater Defense Spending Amid Security Risks
(MENAFN) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Wednesday that the alliance is operating in an increasingly challenging security environment and stressed the need for members to increase investment in defense.
"It is clear if we do not invest more in our security, our collective defense will not be credible," Rutte said during the Annual Lecture at The Ditchley Foundation in Oxfordshire.
He described the current situation facing NATO as the "most dangerous and complex security environment in a generation," while calling for "more Europe" within the alliance.
"We cannot protect our way of life if we do not invest in our defense," he added.
Rutte said European allies are prepared to assume greater responsibility for the alliance’s security, noting that European members and Canada increased their defense spending by nearly 20% in 2025 alone.
"NATO is and will always be a transatlantic alliance. This is the principle that underpins NATO 3.0 and the rebalancing of our security," he said.
The NATO chief also emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining security across Europe, the Atlantic and the Arctic, saying these areas are central to the alliance’s priorities and have implications for the long-term security of the United States.
