Italy Calls for EU Measures Against Israeli Settler Violence
(MENAFN) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged European countries on Wednesday to adopt coordinated measures aimed at addressing violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
Speaking to the Chamber of Deputies, Tajani said European-level action is needed to directly address the activities and financial networks supporting violent settlers.
"to target the activities and sources of funding of violent settlers in a focused and effective manner."
He argued that individual national measures face legal limitations and may have only a limited effect, while also being easier to bypass.
"National measures rest on weak legal foundations, with the risk of having limited impact and of being easily circumvented. This is also why only seven EU countries have announced measures such as those announced by the United Kingdom, France and Canada," he told the Chamber of Deputies.
Tajani described the continued expansion of illegal settlements as "unacceptable," stressing that violence by occupying forces cannot be accepted and warning that such actions could affect prospects for a two-state solution.
"No one can justify actions that undermine the prospect of a two-state solution."
He said the key issue is determining which measures can produce a tangible effect on such conduct, arguing that the European Union provides the appropriate legal and political framework.
"The question is which tools to use to have a real impact on this behaviour. We are convinced that, on matters of this kind, the only effective legal and political framework is that of the European Union," Tajani underscored.
The foreign minister also emphasized the importance of a common European position, saying coordinated action would help ensure that any measures are both effective and applied consistently.
Tajani added that Italy has already backed three rounds of sanctions against Israeli settlers and groups supporting their activities. He said Rome is also supporting a fourth package of measures that remains under discussion.
