UK Foreign Secretary Says Israel Loses Allies Over Gaza, West Bank
(MENAFN) British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said Tuesday that Israel’s government is losing international support over its actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, arguing that these policies have generated growing opposition worldwide.
"The Israeli government is losing friends. It’s not gaining allies; it’s lost allies. It’s losing allies all over," Miliband said in an interview with a UK-based political podcast.
He pointed to Britain’s recent announcement of sanctions related to illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying the measures followed repeated warnings that developments on the ground were undermining prospects for a two-state solution.
"All measures were to make a difference to that, the sanctions regime targeting the illegal occupation, not targeting or delegitimizing in any way the state of Israel," he said.
Miliband argued that the existing situation cannot continue unchanged and highlighted Israel’s E1 settlement expansion plans as a long-standing concern for the international community.
"The status quo is not working," noted Miliband, adding that Israel's E1 settlement expansion project had long been seen as a "red line" for the international community “because it basically would split off East Jerusalem from West Bank (which) really makes Palestinian state unviable.”
He said several factors contributed to the British government’s decision to impose the measures, including the International Court of Justice’s 2024 ruling calling on Israel to end its occupation, dismantle settlements and provide reparations.
Miliband also cited the prolonged occupation of Palestinian territories and the displacement of large numbers of Palestinians as factors behind the government’s decision.
