Nepal Flood Disaster Death Toll Climbs Past Fourteen Hundred
(MENAFN) The number of people killed by last month’s catastrophic flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to more than 1,400 in Nepal, according to disaster authorities on Wednesday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 1,403 people have lost their lives, while 13,742 others have been rescued.
Authorities said 6,150 people are still unaccounted for, including 587 foreign nationals.
On the Chinese side of the border, the reported death toll remains at 43, while 519 people are still missing. Among those missing are 261 foreigners in Tibet, which Beijing officially refers to as the Xizang autonomous region.
The disaster began on Aug. 26 after a glacier on Nepal’s Mount Langtang Lirung broke apart at an elevation of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet).
The collapse caused an avalanche of ice and rocks, which developed into a huge debris flow and moved rapidly through valleys near the border.
Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts were among the hardest-hit areas in Nepal, with severe flooding and mudslides also affecting the Kathmandu Valley.
Across the border, the disaster buried the Gyirong crossing in Xizang, disrupting a key border route.
