3 Killed as Small Plane Crashes in Swiss Alps, Probe Launched
(MENAFN) Three people were killed when a light aircraft went down in the Alpine canton of Valais, Switzerland, according to a broadcaster.
Valais cantonal police said in a statement issued Wednesday that the crash occurred Tuesday afternoon, killing all three occupants of the small plane.
The aircraft, a single-engine Cirrus SR22T, had departed from Lugano in Ticino canton before going down near the town of Leukerbad in Valais, apparently after striking a mountainside.
Rescue crews responded swiftly, dispatching three helicopters and two specialist rescue teams to the crash site. Despite the rapid response, emergency personnel were able to do no more than confirm that all three people aboard had died.
As of Wednesday, authorities had not yet released the identities of the victims.
Officials have opened an investigation into what caused the crash.
The Leukerbad accident adds to a grim tally for Swiss aviation: over the past ten years, the country has recorded nine other air accidents resulting in three or more deaths.
