US, China Prepare to Discuss AI Risks
(MENAFN) The United States is prepared to discuss concerns surrounding artificial intelligence with Chinese officials during high-level economic talks scheduled to take place in New York this weekend, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday.
"The United States remains the leader in AI, and we are open to discussions on avoiding shared risks and avoiding bifurcation of our two systems," Bessent told the Axios news outlet, adding that Washington expects the discussions to "cover both open and closed weight models."
The talks are expected to bring Bessent together with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng for discussions covering artificial intelligence, trade, rare earth minerals and other economic and financial issues. The meetings could continue through Monday, according to reports.
The negotiations are scheduled just days before a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on Sept. 24.
The discussions come as debate intensifies over how quickly advanced AI systems should be developed and deployed. Executives from major technology companies, including Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei and OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman, have called for greater attention to controlling the pace of AI capabilities following cybersecurity-related incidents.
Trump, however, has opposed efforts to slow technological development in the United States, arguing that "whoever wins AI wins" and maintaining that domestic regulatory restrictions or disputes could ultimately give China an advantage.
