UN Chief Seeks High-Level Talks to Advance Gaza Peace Efforts
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday that the United Nations will make every effort to facilitate high-level meetings between leaders during the General Assembly, pointing to last year’s diplomatic engagement that contributed to a Gaza peace plan.
Asked how the UN could help rebuild confidence in the organization following a year marked by wars and growing geopolitical divisions, Guterres said the General Assembly week should be used to bring together key figures involved in major international crises.
"I think we must take profit of this week to allow for a large number of meetings between those leaders that are relevant in the context of the crisis that we are facing."
He recalled a meeting held last year between the United States and several Muslim countries, saying the talks helped produce a peace plan for Gaza. Guterres said the UN would seek to create conditions for similar diplomatic encounters during the current high-level week.
"I would remind you that last year there was a very important meeting of the United States with a number of Muslim countries that led to the peace plan for Gaza, and obviously, I think we will do everything possible to create the opportunities for similar encounters to take place," he said.
Guterres described the General Assembly gathering as an important opportunity for leaders from countries facing conflicts or political disputes to meet directly and explore possible solutions.
"This is an excellent occasion for leaders of countries that are facing confrontations or problems to meet together and to try to find solutions," said Guterres.
