Türkiye Reaffirms Saudi Support After Houthi Drone Attack

(MENAFN) Türkiye on Wednesday condemned a reported Houthi drone attack directed toward the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, while reaffirming its support for the kingdom’s security and territorial integrity.

"We strongly condemn the Houthis' drone attack targeting the holy city of Mecca," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry reiterated Türkiye’s "support for Saudi Arabia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and security," while also expressing “solidarity with Saudi Arabia.”

"We reiterate our call for these attacks, which also threaten regional stability and security, to end immediately and for all actions aimed at further escalating tensions to be avoided," the statement said.

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of Yemen’s prolonged conflict. Fighting intensified after the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, leading a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene the following year in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

The group has entered a renewed phase of fighting with government forces since July, when it announced a maritime blockade targeting Riyadh. The Houthis have since reported gains along sections of the Red Sea coastline and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while also carrying out attacks against Saudi oil infrastructure.

According to the Saudi-led coalition, Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi-launched drone south of Mecca early Wednesday. The coalition said the drone was brought down before it could enter the restricted airspace surrounding the holy city.
