Syrian Military Chief Holds Talks with Russian Commanders in Latakia

(MENAFN) Syrian Chief of General Staff Maj. Gen. Ali al-Naasan visited Khmeimim Air Base in western Latakia province on Wednesday, where he held meetings with Russian military commanders stationed at the facility, according to reports.

Al-Naasan was accompanied during the visit by Air Force Commander Brig. Gen. Asim Hawari and Navy Commander Brig. Gen. Mohammed al-Saud, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry.

The Syrian military delegation met with Russian commanders at the base, although no further information was released about the subjects discussed or the outcome of the meetings.

The visit comes roughly a month after Damascus and Moscow announced a memorandum of understanding concerning changes to Russia’s military presence along Syria’s Mediterranean coastline. The agreement covers facilities including Khmeimim Air Base and the port of Tartus.

Under the memorandum, Syria is expected to take responsibility for civilian facilities, while Russian military sites would be transformed under new arrangements into joint centers focused on training and rehabilitation, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

The agreement provides the two sides with a period of up to three months to complete the transition and implement the new arrangements.
