North Korea Calls Nuclear Status ‘Absolute,’ Rebuffs IAEA

(MENAFN) North Korea has lashed out at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after its general assembly renewed calls for Pyongyang's denuclearization, insisting its status as a nuclear-armed state is non-negotiable, state media reported Thursday.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and one of Pyongyang's most influential voices, blasted the resolution passed at the 70th regular session of the IAEA's General Conference in Vienna, branding the renewed denuclearization push "familiar silly talk," according to a North Korean news agency.

"The DPRK's position as a nuclear weapons state is absolute, which cannot reverse with anything," she said, using the formal name for North Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Delegates at the assembly voiced alarm over the North's growing nuclear arsenal, pressing Pyongyang to dismantle its weapons program in a "complete, verifiable and irreversible manner" in line with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Kim brushed off the appeal as nothing more than diplomatic noise, calling it "all noises, not surprising and not new."

She went further, warning that international pressure campaigns carry no weight in Pyongyang: "No matter how desperately the IAEA and the West may hold periodic meetings and talk about the denuclearization according to the fixed scenario, they can have no effect on the will and ability of the DPRK to take all necessary measures to defend the supreme interests of the state."

Kim framed the country's nuclear posture as fixed and beyond reversal, both domestically and on the world stage: "The reality in which the nuclear position of the DPRK has been permanently settled physically and legally cannot change even a bit."

She closed with a pointed warning to the international community: "No one and nothing can ever reverse the crucial changes in the strength and position of the DPRK and prevent them in the future too."
