China Warns Philippines Over Planned Taiwan Office in Cebu
(MENAFN) China urged the Philippines on Wednesday to uphold the one-China principle as Taiwan moves toward establishing a new representative office in Cebu City.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun called on Manila to demonstrate its adherence to the one-China principle through “concrete” actions and avoid steps that could damage relations between China and the Philippines.
“No matter how the DPP authorities collude with external forces or in what form they seek so-called 'diplomatic breakthroughs,' their efforts to serve the goal of ‘Taiwan independence’ are doomed to be futile,” Guo said, referring to Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
The comments came after Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung announced that Taipei was preparing to establish a representative office in Cebu. The facility would provide services for travelers and businesspeople in the central Philippines, a major tourism destination.
If established, the Cebu office would become Taiwan's second representative office in the Philippines, following its existing facility in Manila.
Lin did not provide a specific timeline for the opening.
He also said Taiwan had proposed creating a Taiwan-Philippines Economic Corridor. The initiative would seek to connect Taiwan with the Luzon Economic Corridor, which is backed by the United States, Japan and the Philippines, with the aim of strengthening and diversifying regional supply chains.
