Moscow Says Ukraine Peace Efforts Remain Stalled
(MENAFN) Russia said Wednesday that there has been no meaningful improvement in the prospects for reaching a political and diplomatic settlement to the Ukraine conflict over recent months.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov attributed the lack of progress to what he called representatives of the “European war party,” saying their actions had prevented negotiations from moving forward.
“Responsibility is on representatives of the European war party for the fact that the prospect of a political and diplomatic solution today, in my opinion, is no closer than it was a few months ago," Ryabkov told a news conference in Moscow.
Addressing US President Donald Trump's proposal for an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Ryabkov said Moscow treats statements from Washington with the utmost seriousness. At the same time, he noted that declarations from the US have not always been followed by corresponding actions.
Ryabkov was also asked about the possibility of renewed discussions between Moscow and Washington on strategic stability. He said there were currently no conditions or opportunities for such talks to begin.
"Russia would be ready to discuss strategic stability with the US only if Washington took concrete steps to improve bilateral relations rather than making what he described as empty declarations," he said.
Turning to security in space, Ryabkov said Moscow had not received notification from Washington about any deployment of weapons into near-Earth orbit.
He added that there remains an opportunity to prevent the emergence of an arms race in outer space.
