Saudi Arabia Calls for Action to Protect Red Sea Shipping
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia has warned that attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group are threatening maritime security in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, urging the international community to coordinate efforts to safeguard vital shipping routes.
The warning was delivered during a UN Security Council meeting, according to reports, with Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Abdulaziz Alwasil presenting the Kingdom’s position.
“Protecting maritime corridors and ensuring freedom of navigation are shared international responsibilities that require adherence to international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” the statement said.
Riyadh cautioned that continued Houthi threats against vessels and maritime routes in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb could affect international commerce and disrupt global supply chains.
Saudi Arabia also pointed to the formation of a multinational defensive maritime coalition in July, saying the initiative is intended to improve maritime security and safeguard freedom of navigation in response to threats facing important waterways in the region.
The Kingdom's warning comes amid continuing tensions involving the Houthis and maritime traffic in the Red Sea. In July, the group announced a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia.
