Russia Rewards Warship Commander After Baltic Helicopter Incident
(MENAFN) Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov has awarded the commander of the Baltic Fleet corvette Soobrazitelny for what Moscow described as “competent and decisive” actions during an encounter with a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the incident took place on Sept. 14 while the warship was operating in international waters in the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea.
According to the ministry, the crew spotted a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter approaching the vessel and said the aircraft did not respond to attempts to establish contact through an international communications channel.
“The corvette's commander made the decision to fire two red signal flares to prevent a provocation by the Danish helicopter, after which the helicopter left the area,” it said.
The incident led Danish authorities to summon Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin to address the confrontation.
Danish officials said the helicopter had been conducting a routine mission in the vicinity of the Russian warship. Denmark's military also stated that one of the flares passed close to the helicopter and that no warning or radio communication had taken place before the flares were launched.
Barbin subsequently raised Moscow's concerns with Danish officials, protesting what he characterized as dangerous maneuvers by Danish military helicopters operating near Russian naval vessels.
The differing accounts of the encounter reflect continued tensions between Russia and NATO members operating in and around the Baltic region.
