Europe Sees Rising Homelessness Among Older People
(MENAFN) Around 170,000 people aged 65 and above are experiencing homelessness across Europe, while the total number of people without stable housing has reached an estimated 1.4 million, according to a new report.
The annual assessment of housing exclusion by European organizations working with homeless people warned that homelessness among older residents is likely being underestimated because available data remains incomplete in many countries.
The report puts the number of people aged 65 and over living on the streets, staying in emergency shelters or relying on specialized homelessness services at 166,261, which it rounds to approximately 170,000.
However, the actual figure could be considerably higher, as countries use different methods to collect homelessness data and information specifically covering older people remains limited.
The broader assessment estimates that about 1.4 million people across Europe are currently homeless. This includes individuals sleeping outdoors, living in emergency accommodation or receiving support through dedicated homelessness services.
Recent figures from 23 European countries showed that homelessness increased in 17 of them, pointing to a broad rise in housing insecurity across the continent.
Ireland recorded the largest long-term increase among countries with comparable data. Its homeless population rose by 367%, from 3,738 people in 2014 to 17,447 in 2026.
Portugal also recorded a substantial increase, with homelessness rising 228%, from 4,414 people in 2017 to 14,476 in 2024.
France experienced a 187% increase over the period covered by the available figures, with the number of homeless people climbing from 110,894 in 2009 to 318,185 in 2024.
The findings highlight the growing scale of homelessness across Europe while also pointing to significant gaps in data concerning older people who lack secure housing.
