Germany Urges EU To Reconsider Proposed Associate Status for Canada
(MENAFN) Germany has welcomed efforts to strengthen the European Union's relationship with Canada but believes the proposed “associate member” designation should be reconsidered.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s spokesman, Stefan Kornelius, said Berlin supports expanding cooperation with Ottawa and is willing to explore new forms of partnership. However, he indicated that the terminology used to describe the proposed arrangement needs further discussion.
“Canada is a particularly close partner for Europe, which is why we are open to discussing new partnership models that would reflect the special importance of this relationship,” Stefan Kornelius said. “However, we should reconsider the terminology — the label — associated with it.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier called for closer partnerships between the EU and other countries as Europe faces increasing geopolitical and economic pressures. She specifically argued that relations with Canada should be elevated “to the highest level possible.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended her address to the European Parliament. Addressing him directly, von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the bloc's first associate member.
“I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU.”
She also highlighted the close ties between Canada and Europe, emphasizing shared interests and values.
“We share one ocean, one set of values, one way of seeing the world. And we will now build our shared future as well,” von der Leyen said.
