AI Leaders Debate How Fast Technology Should Advance
(MENAFN) Top executives from Anthropic, Nvidia and OpenAI presented differing views on the future development of artificial intelligence at Salesforce’s Dreamforce event in San Francisco on Tuesday, highlighting an ongoing debate over whether AI progress should be slowed, subject to additional regulation, or largely overseen by the companies developing the technology.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei again advocated slowing the development of frontier AI systems, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang opposed efforts to reduce the pace of advancement and argued against introducing additional regulations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said public concern about AI was understandable but maintained that developers could continue improving safety protections as AI capabilities expand.
Amodei said the speed at which AI technology has advanced, along with its economic impact, has exceeded expectations even within Anthropic.
“It’s been the pace of the progress, not just of the technology but of the economic side of it,” he told Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff during their discussion at the event.
According to Amodei, Anthropic had anticipated significant improvements in the capabilities of AI models but had underestimated how quickly those advances would translate into rapid company growth and wider adoption across the economy.
He compared the situation to the automotive industry, arguing that if one AI developer experiences a major safety failure, companies across the sector should reassess their own safety practices rather than treating the incident as an isolated problem.
