Belgium Strengthens National AI Strategy to Boost Control

(MENAFN) Belgium has introduced an updated national artificial intelligence strategy designed to expand the country's technological capabilities, develop relevant skills and strengthen policy tools while maintaining greater oversight of AI.

Digitalization Minister Vanessa Matz said the strategy is intended to ensure that artificial intelligence generates value for Belgium while allowing the country to "keep control" over how the technology develops and is used.

Matz said 42% of Belgians are already using generative AI, while AI adoption among Belgian businesses has reached 34.5%, placing the country among European nations where the technology is spreading rapidly.

The strategy replaces and updates Belgium's first National Convergence Plan, which was introduced in 2022. The revised framework reflects developments in both the technological landscape and the broader geopolitical environment.

Under the new approach, Belgium plans to build on existing investments in research and innovation, public-sector services and infrastructure, while also making greater use of European resources and capabilities.

The government intends to focus available resources on selected priority areas and speed up the shift from experimenting with AI to putting the technology into practical use.

The strategy will next be discussed with Belgium's federated entities, which will help determine how the framework is ultimately implemented.

One of the proposed measures involves restructuring the Strategic Committee on AI. The reform would bring representatives from the federated entities into the committee and enhance oversight of projects identified as national priorities.
