EU Should Have Established Mechanism To Counter Russian Threats Back In 2014 Czech Security Expert

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Czech security expert Otakar Foltýn expressed this view in a comment to Ukrinform.

“Europe should have had such a mechanism long ago. Logically, it should have been established at least in 2014, or by 2022 at the latest, when it became clear that the criminal Kremlin regime would be aggressive not only toward Ukraine but toward anyone if it decided at some point that doing so would serve its interests,” Foltýn said.

He stressed that for such a system to be meaningful and functional, it must be linked to Ukraine, and deterrence should be based, among other things, on providing Ukraine with greater support than it has received to date.

The expert also emphasized that“the largest and strongest bloc in defending Europe against an aggressive Kremlin is Ukraine.” He added that he could neither imagine nor accept Europe taking action in the security sphere without Ukraine.

As reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during her State of the Union address in Strasbourg on September 16 that Europe needs its own version of Article 4 of the NATO Treaty to enable urgent consultations in the event of a security threat to an EU member state. She also proposed establishing a new body, a European Security Council, which would include Ukraine.

According to von der Leyen, Europe needs its own mechanism for countering hybrid threats and a consensus on how to respond to incidents that fall below the threshold of armed aggression but clearly threaten national security.
