About the Exhibition

The exhibition Anatomy of Isolation seeks to fill isolation with sensation and form. This exhibition centers on figural work that engages with the body as a vessel for psychological states. There are moments in which we become acutely aware of ourselves, feeling ourselves drift away in the sea of our own mind even as our body responds to exterior space. There is an innateness to being lonely, allowing for comfort to be had in the truth that we are not alone in being alone.

The exhibition is particularly focused on works where isolation and stillness are not depicted, but rather felt. While the human figure is central to this exhibition, interpretations may range from literal to abstract, fragmented, or implied.

It was launched September 8th and runs through December 1st. The virtual exhibition is curated by Olga Abramova and Andrea Maiello, with Executive Director Isabell Sliwinski and Creative Director Isabelle Grace Brett.

About the Artists

This group exhibition, Anatomy of Isolation, is divided into two philosophies: School of London and Neo-Expressionism. Contemporary artists, echoing the School of London, are drawn to figuration not as representation of the body, but as a continuum of psychological states. Layers of paint, ghosting lines, and shifting tones don't conceal the figure-they strip it bare. The artists cut ever deeper, refusing to stop until every outer layer has fallen away and nothing remains hidden. The visible brushstrokes of Olivier Forgues's alla prima work record the duration of the painting process, while the oscillations in Brittney Weiland's swirling, soupy paint allow the figure to emerge in flux.

Neo-Expressionism's commitment to propelling contemporary figuration as a commentary on the weaving of the human condition and mythology, social turmoil, and personal histories. In this light, Dan Isaila offers viewers a heightened perspective on existence between memory and imagination, while Lilli Geyer explores the relationship between authenticity and expressiveness in relation to the world.

The exhibition“Anatomy of Isolation” foregrounds contemporary figurative painting as a mode of articulating existential experience through a selection of works by 25 artists. Each artist inhabits and traverses this subject in their own way, confronting the inherent sense of isolation within the messy realities of life, where personal histories, social conflicts, and powerful emotions intersect.

During the post-war era, existentialism, as expressed in the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, became a dominant philosophy, positing that, in the absence of any absolute truth, the individual was free to struggle and choose, lonesome within the chaos of the world. This philosophy informed a new generation of artists associated with the School of London. They sought to depict the human figure not as an anatomical representation, but as an honest reflection of emotional and psychological truths. The School of London artists were not alone in exploring existentialist themes. Across Europe and the United States, Neo-Expressionist artists portrayed distorted, sometimes disturbing human forms that convey existential alienation, fragility and isolation. In this tradition, figuration became a laboratory for grappling with the raw human condition, marking a renewed engagement with the lived reality.
