Art World Mourns Cat Frazier, Khaled Al Awar, Walter Kershaw, Susan Michod, Joel Snyder, And Timothy White Eagle

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The art world is mourning the passing of six notable figures: graphic designer Cat Frazier, gallerist Khaled Al Awar, muralist Walter Kershaw, painter Susan Michod, photographer and scholar Joel Snyder, and multidisciplinary artist Timothy White Eagle.

Cat Frazier, who lived from 1991 to 2026, was a graphic designer celebrated for her retro-maximalist internet aesthetic. She challenged minimalist design trends by reviving the raw visual culture of the early internet through AnimatedText, a Tumblr page launched in the 2010s that featured text-based GIFs. This page amassed half a million followers and is credited with initiating a new era of web aesthetics defined by pop graphics, intentionally“bad” design, and nihilistic irony. Writer and critic Adrian Chen stated in an interview:“I think she was one of the great pop artists of the 21st-century internet culture. By reappropriating all of this tossed off or forgotten pop culture of an earlier age, [she] showed how you can really make these things your own.”

Khaled Al Awar ( 1948–2026 ), a gallerist and arts advocate, moved to the United States from Lebanon in 1970. He founded Primavera Gallery in Ojai, California, which exhibited emerging artists across various media. Al Awar also owned the Ojai Playhouse Theater, a significant local arts landmark, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts from the city in 2017.

British muralist and street artist Walter Kershaw ( 1940–2026 ) gained widespread attention in the 1970s and 1980s by painting unsanctioned large-scale murals and installing public sculptures on underutilized urban properties in England. Sometimes referred to as“ Britain's first street artist,” his works are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Collection of Brazilian Art in São Paulo, among others.

Susan Michod ( 1945–2026 ) was a feminist painter at the forefront of the Pattern and Decoration movement. Her works were created using techniques such as tearing, collaging, sponging, spattering, and applying glitter. In 1973, she co-founded Artemisia Gallery, a women artists' collaborative in Chicago.

Photographer and scholar Joel Snyder ( 1940–2026 ) was one of the first academics in the US to teach the history of photography. He was crucial in elevating the medium from the periphery to the core of art history, notably studying the rise of commercial photography in the 1800s. Snyder encouraged scholars to understand the creation processes of artworks, and his own photographs are part of the Art Institute of Chicago 's collection.

Multidisciplinary and performance artist Timothy White Eagle ( 1966–2026 ) created performance works, such as the large-scale immersive piece The Indigo Room ( 2023 ), rooted in theater, ritual, and storytelling. They established the performance art and coffeehouse venue, the Coffee Messiah, in Seattle during the 1990s and collaborated with artists including photographer Adrian Chesser and actor and playwright Taylor Mac.
