Swing check valves and dual plate wafer check valves are the two most widely applied Nrv non return valves in industrial, municipal and process pipeline systems. Both prevent reverse flow, yet their structure, water hammer performance, pressure loss and installation requirements differ significantly. Choosing the wrong type often leads to disc slamming, internal leakage or unnecessary maintenance cost. Structure and Working Principle

A swing check valve consists of a hinged disc that swings open when forward flow lifts it, and falls back onto the seat by gravity when flow reverses or stops. It offers a full unobstructed passage, which keeps pressure loss low even at high flow rates and suits large-diameter pipelines and media with relatively clean conditions.

A dual plate check valve, also called a wafer check valve, uses two half-discs hinged on a central shaft and held by torsion springs. It closes quickly under spring force and has a short, compact body that fits between two flanges. The spring-assisted closure provides faster response, but the flow path is partially restricted by the central shaft and springs.

Key Performance Comparison

The most critical difference lies in water hammer control. A standard swing check valve closes by gravity and relies on reverse flow, so the disc may slam violently when a pump stops suddenly, generating a powerful pressure surge. A dual plate check valve closes rapidly under spring force, which greatly reduces the risk of water hammer and is therefore preferred for pump discharge lines and systems with frequent start-stop cycles.

Choose a swing check valve when the pipeline is large-diameter, the medium is clean and the flow is steady and continuous, such as municipal water supply mains, oil transmission lines and steam headers. Its low pressure loss and simple, robust structure make it a long-service, low-maintenance solution in these conditions.

Dual Plate Check Valve Applications

Choose a dual plate check valve when the system experiences frequent pump start-stop, requires tight and quick closure, or faces tight installation space, such as pump discharge lines, HVAC systems, sewage service and chemical plants. Its spring-assisted closure effectively mitigates water hammer and protects the pump and downstream equipment.
