Ukraine Welcomes Latvia's Steps To Restrict Transit Of Russian Grain - MFA

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said this at a briefing on Wednesday, September 16, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

Russia is currently contracting large volumes of grain shipments through Latvia and its ports, Tykhyi said.

“We have been closely monitoring this in coordination with the Latvian side, working proactively, and we see that the Latvian government is taking measures,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

In particular, Ukraine has received“concrete signals” from the Latvian side that it is preparing to increase transit tariffs. There is also discussion of broader bans, along with very close monitoring of attempts to transport stolen Ukrainian grain under the guise of Russian grain.

“We welcome these actions by the Latvian government and very much expect them to be implemented quickly, so that Russia cannot take advantage of what is essentially a window in friendly Baltic territory to transport its products, because it directs the proceeds from them toward terror against Ukrainians and the continuation of its aggression against Ukraine,” Tykhyi stressed.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Russia is using the food crisis and the blockade of the Black Sea as tools to increase migration and destabilize Europe.
